How It Works
Most wedding ceremonies last 20-45 minutes. Catholic masses run 45-60 minutes, while civil ceremonies can be as short as 10 minutes. Each additional element adds 3-5 minutes.
The Formula
Duration = Base Time + Readings x 4 min + Songs x 4 min + Unity (5 min) + Vows (3-8 min) + Processional + Recessional + Ring Exchange
Variables
- Base Time — Catholic 45, Protestant 25, Jewish 30, Non-Denom 15, Civil 10
- Personal Vows — Add ~5 extra minutes vs. traditional repeat-after-me vows
Example
Non-denominational, 2 readings, 2 songs, unity candle, personal vows, 5 attendants: 15 + 8 + 8 + 5 + 8 + 5.5 + 2 + 3 = 54.5 min.
Tips
- Keep it under 30 minutes to hold guest attention
- Practice personal vows — nervousness can make them much longer
- Tell your officiant your target length
- Have a run-through at the rehearsal to time everything
