How It Works
Hotel room blocks typically offer 10-20% off rack rates. Most hotels require 80% of blocked rooms to be booked (attrition clause) or charge a penalty. Block fewer rooms than you think — unfilled rooms can cost you.
The Formula
Block Size = Rooms Needed x 85% (conservative)
Group Rate = Rack Rate x (1 - Discount%)
Attrition Minimum = Block Size x 80%
Group Rate = Rack Rate x (1 - Discount%)
Attrition Minimum = Block Size x 80%
Variables
- Rack Rate — Normal nightly room rate without discount
- Attrition Clause — Minimum rooms that must be booked to avoid penalty (usually 80%)
Example
60 OOT guests, 2 per room = 30 rooms. Block 26 rooms. At $180/night with 15% discount: $153/night group rate. Total savings: $1,620.
Tips
- Block fewer rooms than you need — you can always add more
- Negotiate the attrition clause down to 70% if possible
- Set a booking deadline 30 days before the wedding
- Offer room blocks at 2-3 price points (budget, mid, luxury)
- Include hotel info with save-the-dates so guests can book early
