How It Works
A well-planned reception balances structured events (dinner, toasts, dances) with free time for dancing and socializing. Most structured events happen in the first 2-3 hours.
The Formula
Dancing Time = Total Reception - (Cocktails + Dinner + Toasts + Dances + Cake)
Variables
- Dinner Duration — Plated: 75 min, Buffet: 60 min, Stations: 70 min, Family: 65 min
- Toast Time — Average 5 minutes per toast (encourage brevity!)
Example
5-hour reception: 60 min cocktails + 75 min dinner + 15 min toasts + 18 min dances + 10 min cake = 178 min structured, 122 min dancing.
Tips
- Front-load structured events so the second half is all dancing
- Ask toast-givers to keep it under 5 minutes
- Buffets and stations move faster than plated service
- Do the cake cutting early so staff can plate and serve during dancing
- Give your DJ/band a copy of the timeline in advance
