How It Works
Wedding vendor tips typically add 10-20% to your overall budget. Not all vendors expect tips, but most service staff do. Always check contracts first — some include gratuity.
The Formula
Tip = Service Cost x Tip Percentage x Quality Multiplier
Standard: Catering 18-20%, Photo 10%, DJ 15%, Beauty 20%, Transport 18%
Standard: Catering 18-20%, Photo 10%, DJ 15%, Beauty 20%, Transport 18%
Variables
- Service Cost — The total bill for each vendor
- Tip % — Industry-standard tip percentage for the vendor type
- Quality Multiplier — Adjust up for exceptional service, down for standard
Example
On an $8,000 catering bill: 18% tip = $1,440. Six servers at $50 each = $300. Total catering tips = $1,740.
Tips
- Check your contracts — some venues include automatic gratuity
- Prepare tips in labeled envelopes before the wedding day
- Assign a trusted person (best man, coordinator) to distribute tips
- Venue-owned vendors (in-house caterer) may not need separate tips
- When in doubt, $50-100 per vendor is a safe thank-you amount
